The Good Garage Scheme: Are Your Tyres Safe? Are Your Tyres Safe?

Are Your Tyres Safe?

Don't Chance It, Check It a message from TyreSafe

Why is it important to check tyres

It is critical that tyres are in good condition in order to maintain road safety and the Good Garage Scheme advises that tyres are checked at least once a month and prior to going on a long journey, but it is wise to have a quick visual check prior to each time you use your car.

The main things to check are pressure, tread depth and condition.

Pressure

Correct tyre pressure is vital to your safety on the road. Under-inflated tyres affect handling and grip, potentially causing irregular or unpredictable vehicle behaviour.

Not only could they wear out more quickly, but by keeping your tyres at their optimum pressure, your running costs are also reduced. Under-inflated tyres require a bigger force to make them turn, so your car uses more fuel.

The correct pressure for your vehicle is likely to be shown on the car door or fuel flap of your car. If it is not visibile there, it will be in your vehicle handbook.

Tyre Tread

The legal tread depth for cars in the UK is 1.6mm. Tyres without the minimum tread depth will fail the MOT test and drivers risk a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points for each illegal tyre if stopped. The tyre tread grooves help to remove water from the contact patch between your tyres and the road surface helping your car to  brake, steer and accelerate properly.

The tread on tyres is there to help your car perform as well as possible in wet conditions

The 20p Test

A quick and easy way to see if your tyre tread exceed the minimum legal tread depth is to take the 20p test.

Simply place a 20p coin into the main tread grooves of your tyre. If the outer band of the 20p coin is obscured when it is inserted, then your tread is above the legal limit.

If the outer band of the coin is visible, then your tyres may be illegal and unsafe and should be checked immediately by a qualified tyre professional.

When taking the test, remember to check at least three locations around each tyre. As the test is so quick and easy, stay safe by checking your tyres at least once a month.

Regular checks should be carried out by drivers and Good Garage Scheme member garages can offer advice any time of the year with seasonal check.

The Good Garage Scheme is pleased to support TyreSafe, a charitable organisation that campaigns to raise awareness of the importance of tyre safety.
